Taoism and Confucianism developed out of common roots, though over time Taoism became a religion of the mystical, intuitive search and Confucianism a religion based on the rational and the practical. While Taoism holds that intellectual knowledge cannot provide ultimate insight, Confucianism sets great store by book learning. Confucianism was built up around rules and principles, while Taoism developed into a religion strikingly free from dogma. In some ways they are opposites, and yet many practitioners live with one foot in each religion. The truly wise person is not disturbed by the inherent paradoxes, but instead regards them as important steps toward insight.

In spite of their differences, the line of demarcation between Taoism and Confucianism is a blurry one, and the two religions share a core of beliefs, including the idea that the universe is governed by hidden forces that are fundamentally beyond human comprehension. It is not farfetched to compare this idea with similar thoughts about the ultimate reality described in other religions as a concealed God, but this possibility can neither be confirmed nor denied.
